A home is often the biggest investment people will make in their entire lives. In honor of National Home Ownership Month, A1 Exterminators encourages homeowners to take steps to prevent common household pests from causing damage that can decrease the value of their home. “Most homeowners know that owning a home comes with the responsibility of ongoing maintenance, but many may not add pest prevention to their list of chores, even though they absolutely should,” said Gary Weisberg, Owner, A1 Exterminators. “Aside from being unsightly and unnerving, common household pests can cause home damage that is expensive and time consuming to fix.”
Taking steps to prevent pests before they become a problem, as well as taking quick action and contacting a licensed pest professional if they appear, can save homeowners some serious headaches down the road. For example, termites cause approximately $5 billion in property damage every year, and this damage is not typically covered by homeowners insurance. Rodents bring a slew of hazards into a home as they can increase the potential risk for fires by chewing through wood, drywall and electrical wires. Additionally, mice are capable of dropping up to 25,000 fecal pellets each year, an estimated 70 times each day, threatening both human health and property.
The National Pest Management Association recommends these everyday prevention tips for protecting a home from destructive household pests:
- Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home including entry points for utilities and pipes.
- Keep tree branches and shrubbery well-trimmed and away from the house.
- Keep basements, attics, and crawl spaces well-ventilated and dry.
- Store garbage in sealed containers and dispose of it regularly.
- Repair fascia and rotted roof shingles; some insects are drawn to deteriorating wood.
- Replace weather-stripping and repair loose mortar around basement foundation and windows.
- Store fire wood at least 20 feet away from the house and five inches off the ground.
- Call our qualified pest professionals for additional advice and treatment if necessary.
