This is the season Bees are starting to be visible and get working on their job to pollinate the earth. Most people do not want a bee colony on their property. The best way to prevent bees from establishing a colony on your property is to not provide them with an ideal environment. Bees require three things to survive: food, water and shelter.
To Keep Bees from Invading Your Property:
- Be sure window screens are fitted properly
- Fill any holes made in the ground by animals
- Remove trash and debris as soon as possible
- Fill holes that are larger than 1/8 inch in diameter in trees and/or walls
- Fill cracks in walls and foundation as well as around the roof of your home.
If you do happen to have some Bees move into your yard, be careful around them but know that Bees don’t transmit disease. However, they do inject a venom through their stingers that can lead to serious allergic reactions.
Unlike wasps, which can sting multiple times, bees lose their stinger after stinging you. This stinger and its accompanying venom sac can continue to release venom as long as it’s in your skin. Removal of the stinger is important and should be done carefully. The longer the stinger stays in, the more venom is released into your body. A bee sting will possible cause some swelling, pain and can itch at the site. These symptoms can last for up to a week. Some people may develop an allergic reaction to the venom; this would occur within seconds to minutes of the sting and requires medical attention. Contact your doctor immediately if you think you may be having an allergic reaction. Allergic reaction signs to look for are swelling that extends 10 centimeters or more past the sting site, itching or hives all over your body, light-headedness, loss of consciousness, nausea and vomiting.
