Identifying Weevils

Weevils are beetles belonging to the superfamily Curculionoidea, known for their elongated snouts.

These small, herbivorous insects typically measure less than 6 mm (1⁄4 in) in length. There are approximately 97,000 known species of weevils.

Weevils vary in their ability to fly; for instance, rice weevils have fully developed wings and can fly, making them easily identifiable. These weevils are often reddish-brown or black with light reddish-yellow spots. In their larval stage, rice weevils are soft-bodied and white, feeding inside grain kernels. The larvae are legless, creamy-white with a brownish-black head, and primarily attack corn, wheat, rice, beans, nuts, cereals, rye, buckwheat, stored cotton, wheat products, grapes, apples, and pears.

Adult weevils have long, slender snouts, six legs, and folded antennae. They are usually reddish-brown to black, with some species displaying patterns on their wings. Adults live for about four to five months, and each female can lay 300 to 400 eggs in her lifetime. During hot weather, weevils can complete their life cycle (egg, larva, pupa, adult) in as few as 26 days, although this process takes longer in cooler conditions.
